person, or one rider that can create victory in Baja. You need to have a team that includes pit crews and dedicated people who are reliable." One of his most memorable moments in SCORE racing was the Baja 2000. "In the year 2000, SCORE came up with a unique way to run the 1000, which traversed the peninsula all the way to Cabo San Lucas." It was nearly 2000 miles and I rode six different segments." But now that he's a team owner, Campbell definitely appreciates what goes on behind the scenes, and puts the same amount of focus and dedication to the team, as he did as a rider. "To win the SCORE Baja 1000 as a racer, it gives you a sense of accomplishment because you're so focused on going fast and wanting to do everything perfect," he says. But Campbell is also quick to point out that as a team owner, there's much more involved. "You have all your pit people, all the crews, all the trucks, mechanics, bikes, and all the riders. Everything has to go together. So to win as a team owner, is a bigger deal than just as a racer." "He's an icon of Baja, but I also think of him as my brother," says Cameron Steele, Baja Champion and owner of team Desert Assassins. "We like to spend a lot of time riding our dirt bikes together and I have a lot of respect for Johnny. He can focus in on what it's going to take to do it, and make it happen." Last year for fun, Campbell and Steele traveled to Iceland to make a cross country trip across difficult and scenic terrain. It was a memorable trip that both shared and that meant a lot to each other, and demonstrates their love for riding. The term Baja Icon is something that many SCORE racers use to explain Campbell's accomplishments. It's one that Campbell very graciously accepts, but is definitely not arrogant about. "I'm very thankful and proud to be labeled in the same category as these Baja icons. It was a dream as a young boy to be a racer and to be on the list of those guys, hanging on the same wall is absolutely amazing!" SJ CLICK THE PLAYER TO VIEW JOHNNY CAMPBELL VIDEO 071 SCORE JOURNAL
