SCORE-INTERNATIONAL RACE SHOE WITH OFF-ROAD SOLE, FROM STAND 21. STAND 21 RACE GLOVE WITH LEATHER SEAMS INSIDE OUT FOR GREATER PROTECTION. temperatures. The temperatures inside enclosed cars can exceed 150F at floor level, where heat rises through the cockpit's environment. A suit like the Air Force, allows cool outside, air to penetrate inside the driver's suit through air vent tubes pointed at the chest so that the effect is direct. This allows perspiration to dry quite effectively. This is a major factor in avoiding medical heat stress, a problem becoming ever more critical as higher levels of heat from ever-more powerful engines and systems penetrates the cockpit's environment, compounded by an increase in solar heat as the vehicle progresses in its completion of a race during daytime. The ST3000 works differently, but performs the same type of cooling when used inside off- road racing vehicles but without the need for routing air from the outside into the suit. In a larger, open cockpit like in an off-road racing vehicle, a suit like the ST3000 is so effective that during night racing in cooler weather, Stand 21 now offers a special wind-breaker jacket for night racing, developed in collaboration with such top- level racers as Armin Schwarz. Another example is the DNA fire suit made by Simpson Race Products. Made in the USA, the DNA STD 3-Layer suit, rated at SFI.5, as an example of a multi- layer race suit using cutting edge technology. It is constructed from flexible, light weight fabric that is breathable, and has maximum thermal protection characteristics built into it. The Simpson DNA suit is also made with Titanium Nomex® technology. "The DNA suit will impress any racer. It has almost no restriction to movement and is incredibly breathable and lightweight," says Bishop. "It is constructed for athletes looking for the best modern race suit technology available. Integrated cuffs replace traditional cuffs and minimize material at the wrist area. Pre-bent four-way stretch fabric at the elbows, knee, thigh and back reduce stress in these areas. A lower back stretch panel reduces pull down pressure on the shoulders caused by sitting. The DNA suit 080 SCORE JOURNAL
