been unbelievable," Painter said last
week. "He's one of the best, if not the
best, perimeter defensive players out
there. Every night, he takes that on as a
challenge and look who he's guarded.
I think one guy all season in Big Ten
play has gotten him, (Penn State's) D.J.
Newbill. Outside of that, I think he's got-
ten the upper hand on everybody he's
guarded.
"He has been one of the best de-
fenders we've had here in the past 10
years."
Davis isn't quite sure he'd go that far.
When told of Painter's statement, he
declared it "pretty bold."
He doesn't lead the Boilermakers in
steals or blocks, the latter not surprising
considering he's a guard.
His success is hard to calculate in
numbers because Purdue often switches
on ball screens 1-4, so Davis isn't neces-
sarily guarding the other team's best pe-
rimeter player for every shot. So to say
he was responsible, for example, when
Wisconsin's Sam Dekker was 2-of-7 for
only six points, it's not an ideal represen-
tation. Dekker's two baskets could have
been against another defender after a
switch or Davis could have been guard-
