GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 23 • 26 said. "There's something in there for every- body. Now, if you buy a season ticket, you're not going to have to worry about us com- ing in and doing a $5 special, which alien- ates and irritates people but happens all the time. It's not good for fan loyalty." Another significant piece to the boost- ing attendance is to get students in the stands. Peludat and Burke hope a change to the pricing there will spark interest imme- diately. Instead of purchasing VIP cards for $250, the new option is the Boarding Pass for $99. Students who join the respective student section are guaranteed seats for men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball — there is limited capacity in those venues, obviously — but all football home games are included without limit. The change is in response to results from a focus group Peludat formed last se- mester to target why students weren't at- tending games. Though team performance and game times were a factor, he said the price was the hot-button issue. So he re- searched the plans of other Big Ten schools and Power 5 schools and found that even though Purdue was in the lower half of the Big Ten, it still was more expensive than the majority of schools. (For example, he said, Alabama students pay only $10 per game for football.) "That's where we developed the Board- ing Pass. It's a step where we hope we've eliminated price from the discussion," he said. "You've got the $99 gets you access to pretty much everything." A BOOST FROM UNIVERSITY Three days after the football season ended, Burke said he thought lowering ticket prices could be "a dangerous situa- tion to get into." What changed? Burke hadn't seen the proposal yet from Peludat about how to boost sales among the general public and, perhaps more importantly, he didn't know then he'd get "help" from the univer- sity.
