GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 23 • 28 BY TRAVIS BAUGH TBaugh@Purdue.edu T he women's track and field team put together one of its best performances in school his- tory over the weekend. Not only did the Boilermakers tie for third at the Big Ten Indoor Championships — the team's highest finish since 2001 — but four school records were broken as well. Still, the meet didn't quite match the expectations Coach Lonnie Greene set. "Honestly, I thought we could be worst-case scenario second," Greene said. "I thought we had a shot going into (Sat- urday) to win it because we had people positioned in the right places. We had a few letdowns here and there, but I'm pretty proud of the way the young women competed. They com- peted tough and went after it." As expected, Purdue was led by strong showings from its sprinters. Devynne Charlton scored a team-high 18 points for Purdue with two silver medals and a sev- enth-place finish. She broke her own school record in the 60-me- ter dash with a time of 7.38, good for a second place. She followed that up with another runner-up showing in the 60-meter hurdles, where she came just a hundredth of a second from eclipsing her own school record with a time of 8.18. Her seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash gave Purdue two points. Fellow Bahamian Carmiesha Cox turned out a solid perfor - mance as well, finishing sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.44) and captur- ing bronze in the 200-meter dash (23.78). She set a new school re- cord with a time of 23.68 in the pre- liminaries Friday. Cox and Charlton became the first Purdue women to score in the 200 at the Big Ten Championships this century. Symone Black continued her solid freshman campaign. She shattered the school record in the 400-meter dash by 0.82 of a second with a time of 53.47, good enough for a second-place finish. "I was very nervous at first but Coach Greene talked to me and calmed me down," Black said. "I didn't think about that I was the only freshman or any- thing else. I just ran. I got kind of boxed in, but then there was an opening so I went for it and I ended up getting second." The 53.47 mark came as a surprise for the freshman. "I never thought I had that in me," Black said. "Coach Greene always told me that I did. I be- lieved it, but it hadn't manifest- ed like he said. I was very happy and surprised myself." Additionally, Black ran the anchor leg of the 4 x 400-me- ter dash team that finished WOMEN'S TRACK FINISHES THIRD AT BIG TENS Four school records fall in strong effort Purdue Hope Schmelzle, Katie Hoevet and Kiara McIntosh (left to right) combined for 11 points in the mile. It marked the first time in school history three milers placed at the Big Tens. Purdue Devynne Charlton (60-meter dash) and Carmiesha Cox (200- meter dash) set school records at the Big Ten Championships.
