GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 23 • 29 third and set a new Purdue record with 3:36.95. There was a bit of controversy in the event however, as Black was bumped at the line by an Ohio State runner dur- ing the handoff. Greene protested the no-call, but it was ultimately upheld. If Ohio State had been disqualified in the event, Purdue would have finished second at the meet overall as it trailed Michigan by just one point. "That happens in track and field," Greene said. "Unfortunately it happened to us (Saturday)." Purdue saw its most success in the distance events in the mile. Katie Hoevet (third), Kiara McIntosh (sixth) and Hope Schmelzle (seventh) gave Purdue three scorers in the event for the first time in Big Ten Championship history. "It was really exciting to see all of our hard work pay off. Hope and I, Kiara, spe- cifically within the middle distance crew, talked in the beginning of the season about what we were looking to accom- plish before the season was over," Hoevet said. "Three women had never scored in the mile, and we said that was our goal." Hoevet also ran the mile for Purdue's distance medley team that finished third with a time of 11:12.67, the second-fast- est in school history. "It was the whole crew coming together and working," Hoevet said. "It was super exciting to see us all reach our potential and push the limits and put the Purdue distance crew on the map." Vanessa McLeod (sixth in the 800-meter dash) and Cierra Brown (fifth in the triple jump), and Eliza- beth Iverson (sixth in the shot put) also received points for the Boiler- makers. Every Boilermaker who scored at the Big Ten Championships will return next season, and all are underclassmen with the exception of juniors Hoevet, Brown, McLeod and Aarin Jones. "It bodes to the talent we were blessed to be able to recruit," Greene said. "Their talented young women. We have to continue to nurture them and keep them healthy." The makeup of Purdue's team has Greene excited for the outdoor season to begin, which kicks off with the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach on March 19. Moving outdoors means event addi- tions of the 100-meter dash, 4 x 100-me- ter relay and 400-meter hurdles to the lineup, an advantage for the sprint-heavy Boilermakers. "We're a stronger team outdoors Purdue Brionna Thomas and Symone Black (left to right) ran the final two legs of Purdue's relay that finished in third place.
