14 REFEREES OF R egular customers become loyal customers when they receive excellent service. When it comes to indoor sports, referees play an especially large part in providing it. They have a lot of power. Not only can they control play, but they can eject and send customers home. In short, their performance can define your reputation. For most indoor facilities, a core group of referees tend to officiate all its games. This enhances managers' ability to safeguard their brand and serve customers as a result of a well- administered referee program. The same ability cannot always be said of open leagues, where play is typically spread out among many venues and referees are not so much beholden to the business owner. So, in terms of refereeing, what can you do to show customers that you care? Having invested in a referee program, not only will you benefit from an effective, loyal workforce, but also from respect and gratitude of your customers, happy for the consistent, safe and fair play you provide.
