Hammons for the honor. Davis said he was surprised by the honor. "My hopes weren't up or anything like that," he said. "(Hammons) was as deserving of it as I was. If it wasn't one of us, I probably would have been upset." Hammons' hopes were up. "I did want it. I'm proud of Ray, though," Hammons said. "He put in a lot of work for it. "I wanted it. He wanted it. He came out and got it. It's cool. I'll still come out and do my job." Davis and Hammons were each named to the Big Ten's All-Defensive Team. Davis routinely guarded opponents' top wing scor - er and routinely limited them severely. Purdue led the conference in Big Ten play in field- goal percentage defense (39.3 percent) and three-point field goal percentage defense (32.2). The Boilermakers allowed just 63.9 points per game in Big Ten play, tied for the fourth-best average in the conference with Nebraska. Davis is the eighth Purdue player to win the honor, joining Ricky Hall (1984), Porter Roberts (1996), Kenneth Lowe (2003 and 2004), Chris Kramer (2008 and 2010) and JaJuan Johnson (2011). Hammons led the Big Ten in blocks and improved considerably as an overall defensive player, another cru - cial component in Purdue's turnaround defensively. "You could argue (Hammons) is the best defensive player in the league," Coach Matt Painter said. "… He changes the game. A.J. erases their mistakes at times. There are games where we're really good on the pe- rimeter and he doesn't get a lot of opportunities down there because they're doing their job. Some of the games where he has (a lot of ) blocks, people don't real- ize, there's mistakes going on. … We had three or four games this season he just dominated, not only with his blocks, but his ability to alter shots. "It's a great combination we have." The reality is that the award could have gone either way and maybe it can be looked at as Purdue having Big Ten Defensive Player-of-the-Year 1A and Big Ten Defensive Player-of-the-Year 1B. "Without him back there blocking shots," Davis said, "I don't know if I'd have gotten it." HAMMONS NAMED SECOND-TEAM ALL-BIG TEN Hammons was named to the media's and coaches' second-team lists. The Boilermaker big man was named honorable mention All-Big Ten last season.
