GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 25 • 21 to transfer it up here to the practice field then the game field. We've got to be able to throw those balls and have the expectation that we're going to go get it every single time." STILL LOOKING Though Evan Panfil and Gelen Robinson appear to have the starting defensive end spots locked up after Ryan Russell and Jalani Phillips graduated, there still are starting spots up for grabs this spring. Namely, the safeties. Robert Gregory and converted corner- back Leroy Clark spent the week working with the No. 1 unit, but redshirt freshmen Tim Cason and Brandon Roberts could challenge. Cason worked with the second team for all three practices, and Rob- erts moved into more snaps with the 2s later in the week, though Evan Feichter also got No. 2 reps. "You're looking for two things: Guys who can be great erasers or guys who can be great cover guys," Hudson said. "So let's find something in the middle where if our front seven does a great job then it takes the pressure off of them. And at times they've got to help out. We're try - ing to find a happy medium where it's a good 11 guys playing defense." But it's not just about re- placing production lost from Landon Feichter and Taylor Richards — it's also the leadership void that needs to be filled. With Frankie Williams out this spring af- ter foot surgery, there are few experienced defensive backs and even fewer with the personalities to speak up and loudly make calls. That'll need to be rectified by the fall. ON THE MEND Purdue didn't suffer any new injuries over the first week of practice, but it's still without Williams (foot), J.J. Prince (shoulder), Cameron Cermin (shoulder), Danny Anthrop (knee), Ben Makowski (foot) and Langston Newton (foot). j Tom Campbell Junior Austin Appleby had the sharpest first week of the quarterbacks, who rotated with the No. 1 offense over three practices.
