Track of The monTh aera - You know Juno The Berlin producer drops a bomb House duo 99 Souls, who describe themselves as "one jazz kid and one hip hop kid who fell in love with the 4/4 kick drum", dropped their first single 'The Girl Is Mine' in December last year. The track samples vocals from two R&B classics: Brandy and Monica's 'The Boy is Mine' and Destiny's Child's 'Girl', and mixes them with a modern twist. 'The Girl Is Mine' has received wide airplay, including a spot on Pete Tong's "Essential New Tunes", and 99 Souls, having played their first gig at XOYO last month, are gaining fans by the day. We can't wait to see what these two drop next! The DJ duo who mix old soul music with contemporary house are set for success after their "genius" debut single Meandering soundscapes and steely techno: the debut LP from Levon Vincent is worth a listen ones To waTch 99 souls il moffa album of The monTh levon vincenT - levon vincenT Hugely influential Novel Sound boss Levon Vincent has dropped his long-awaited self-titled debut LP, and in true subversive fashion, announced its arrival by leaking the full free download himself via social media. The album has what might be a surprising start for those familiar with his blistering DJ sets; both 'The Beginning' and 'Phantom Power' meander through an obscure electronic landscape, which contrast sharply with third track 'Junkies' on Hermann Strauss's relentlessly driving heavy bass thud. This austere atmosphere is lightened with fourth track 'Launch Ramp To Tha Sky', a full 11 minutes of Four Tet- esque xylophones set against a danceable beat building up to a futuristic climax. However, the club-suitable tracks are saved for the last quarter. 'Anti-Corporate Music' is at once a steady techno slow-burner and a political statement; Levon Vincent wrote in a Facebook post "This is music for the ugly ducklings of the world… If you're a member of the rat race…you may of course listen, but know—this is not music for you. This is action against you." The real climax of the piece, however, is final track 'Woman Is Angel' (presumably in opposition to his 2008 hit Woman is The Devil), whose floor-shaking, techno- cello, thudding bass line and shimmering metallic echoes are certifiable dance floor ammunition. Levon Vincent's debut has achieved that rare combination, taking things a little weirder without it feeling self-indulgent, whilst still providing moments of dance floor techno gold. Maximum respect for the free download too! 30 Issue 73 / 2015 HOUSE/ tEcHnO guestlist.net crescendo Crackazat I Had this thing (Joris Voorn remix) Rokysopp, Joris Voorn tourist trap Jamie Jones, Guy Gerber, David K Vapourspace Sasha carefree HNNY Spiral Arms EP Youandewan Still Lemonade Redshape, Skream Dominonation Remixes Part 1 Hot Since 82, Kele, Argy & Mama Warp Subb-an, Jacob Phono Graveyardshift EP Sante A Man needs A Woman Phil Weeks the Frenchie thing EP Reboot our PlaYlisT More @ guestlist.net/house Aera is the Berlin producer best known for trippy house which makes excursions into UK bass and electro. His latest offering comes through Maeve, the label run by Mano le Tough, the Drifter and Baikal. 'You Know Juno' sounds like something the three would play – dancefloor- ready enough to ignite a room of clubbers and arty enough to please dance music connoisseurs. The bass is a curious creation, modulated into strange shapes over melancholic synths. Whilst it's a bit too bizarre to be the hit of the season, it's a fitting addition to the repertoire of a producer becoming known for exotic, new sounds.
