every single day. And it's especially difficult when you don't have a lot of leadership. "To see them succeed this year is a special part of this process." Like the men competing in the loaded Big Ten conference in just their fourth varsity year, the difficulty might be even greater for the women, making the same move as just a sec- ond-year varsity program. Confer- ence rival Northwestern won seven of eight national titles from 2005-12, missing out only in 2010 when new conference rival Maryland took the crown (the Terps also won the 2014 national championship, making 2013 —– when North Carolina was the champ — the only time since Virginia in 2004 that the championship trophy resided outside Big Ten country). "I think it's fantastic — we want to be in one of the best conferences, and between Maryland and North- western the Big Ten has won nine of the last 10 championships, so we're up against the best, but this is the University of Michigan," Ulehla said. "Michigan will draw the best student-athletes and, in time, we'll be competing for Big Ten champion- ships, and that will help us be com- petitive nationally." As is the case with the men, there is a long road to becoming one of the country's top programs. With Ulehla in charge, the Maize and Blue are on the right path. ❏ Sophmore Kim Coughlan and the Wolverines were off to a 4-3 start, as of March 15, in the progam's second year of varsity competition.
