GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 26 • 17 BY STACY CLARDIE SClardie@GoldandBlack.com W hen the opportunity to return to South Africa for a spring break mission trip came again, Paul Griggs couldn't pass it up. Griggs was transformed by his first visit with Purdue athletic chap- lain Marty Dittmar and a group of student-athletes to Bethesda Orphan Outreach in the village of Hamman- skraal, South Africa, and he was eager to see how he could affect change again. So Griggs joined Dittmar along with quarterback David Blough and former receiver B.J. Knauf over Pur- due's spring break last week to head back to the orphanage. "Had an ab- solute blast doing some good work with (Blough) and (Knauf ) in South Africa this past week," Griggs posted on Instagram. Many of the children who live at Bethesda typically end up there because their parents have succumbed to AIDS or have HIV, the virus that affects nearly 6 million South Africans. At the orphanage, though, children are raised in two- parent homes and attend school on the complex. During visits by Ditt- mar's groups, the kids have a "sports day" with the visitors — they're not so much into American football, though it's always brought out when certain groups visit — and almost every af- ternoon includes soccer matches on a large dirt area. There's also labor involved, too. The group built a swing set for a near- by orphanage in Stinkwater and also dug up a water line on Bethesda's property to be replaced by new tubing. The group also spent time each night in fellowship. "What a week," Blough posted on Ins- tagram. "Got to spend it in South Africa at Bethesda Orphan Outreach. Met incred- ible men and women who love God and inspired me more than I could ever express." BIG STAR Ryan Kerrigan is a Pro Bowl line- backer for the Washington Redskins, but he's quickly adding to his "actor" résumé. Kerrigan recently filmed a scene for the made-for-TV movie "Shark- nado 3," which will premiere in July. Kerrigan will play a NASA technician who is asked to help stop a Shark- nado attack. "When I got asked to be a part of it, I was all in right from the start," Ker- rigan told the Washington Post. "I'm pretty pumped to be (in it)." Kerrigan has been in commer- cials in the Washington D.C. area, in- cluding playing the sun in an ad for Thompson Creek windows. On the set for Sharknado, Kerrigan spent about four hours filming. "It was not as nerve- wracking as I thought," Kerri - gan told the pa- per. "It was kind of as I expected. I had to do a lot of takes. They know what looks good, they know what sounds good. You can't take the direction as criticism, you have to just take it as in- struction. That's what I did." T-SHIRT CONTEST Purdue fans have a chance to win prizes by designing a T-shirt that will be sold in local book stores five days before the spring game. Purdue will choose three finalists and online voting will determine the winner. The winner will receive tickets, $300 in apparel courtesy of Freck - les Graphics and a signed Kerrigan hat. The shirt will be sold at The Purdue Team Store and University Book Store.
