62 | Ignitemag.ca | April | May 2015 Malta The Mediterranean islands of Malta are rich with a varied his- tory dating back thousands of years, and home to some of the world's oldest free-standing monuments. Delegates will be enchanted by receptions amid megalithic temples, and plan- ners will appreciate the array of contemporary purpose-built meeting and conference facilities. Few destinations can offer up a 16th century landmark as a state-of-the-art conference venue. Constructed as a hospital in 1574 by the Knights of St. John, the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta has been equipped with modern technological amenities. Its largest hall, the Sacra Infermeria (as the build- ing was formerly known), accommodates 1,400 for a sit-down dinner and 2,500 for receptions. Palazzo de Piro within the medieval walled city of Mdina is a centuries-old palace restored to its former glory to become a flexible, multi-functional venue. A collection of baroque- inspired inter-connecting rooms can accommodate up to 800 guests, while dinner on the bastion terrace delivers panoramic city views. Be sure to allot time on the agenda for exploring the islands—the ancient churches, catacombs and forts of Malta, the rugged coastline of Gozo for spectacular diving and a visit to the prehistoric temples of Ġgantija, and the serene and vir- tually uninhabited island of Comino for a swim in the pristine Blue Lagoon.
