Heralded as Canada's Arctic Monkeys and likened to The Strokes, Hot Hot Heat, The Pixies and The Rapture, JPNSGRLS have a frenzied energy mixed with an ability to craft truly catchy indie ear-worms. The band's debut EP The Sharkweek was an experimental mix of styles including barbed wire guitar riffs, emotionally aching pop-rock, and futuristic electronics. With their debut album Circulation, JPNSGRLS have maintained their signature eclecticism, but have focused on electrifying live energy and a more cohesive style. "We wanted to get it sounding as live and raw as possible," Mann says, noting that nearly all of the parts can be replicated live. This less-is-more approach makes Circulation a whirlwind of garage noisiness and earworm hooks. It starts with the combustible opener 'Smalls', a song that explores the excitement and self-destruction of drug use. This leads into 'Tiger', which shifts, between spiky riffs and vintage pop choruses that feature Bays on backup harmonies. Elsewhere, 'Southern Comforting' is an atmospheric scorcher that explores toxic relationships — both with people and with alcohol — while the thundering 'Mushrooms' is an anthem about fighting back against oppression. ALbum of thE moNth JPNSGRLS - CiRCuLAtioN The Canadian rockers bring the noise with their debut album Mixing layers of giddy electro pop and indie with noisier, darker thrills, 'Ares' has a sound that is both familiar and unique. The strength of the lyrics adds to the impact of the track; lead singer Andy Trimmer's proclamation "I'm a man that can't be saved" is a powerful hook that expertly leads into a synth crescendo. The band has already received great radio support, and the single is a strong addition to the catalogue of this talented band, sure to please both old fans and those finding the Winters Island sound for the first time. tRACk of thE moNth WiNtERS iSLANd - ARES The electro-pop trio dropped single 'Ares' on April 6th Kele told Aussie station Triple J that the band are at the writing /stage, and have a number of ideas to lay down. He said that the album is sounding "like nothing that we've done before but that's what everyone always says...So far there's nothing that I can compare it to really in terms of other musicians, whereas in the past I always could - we were always trying to reference something else." It's all change with the band line- up as well – bassist Gordon Moakes has left to pursue a new project. Let's hope they don't leave us waiting too much longer.
