42 Issue 74 / 2015 guestlist.net Artist/Album of the month KendricK lAmAr - to PimP A butterfly Kendrick Lamar suddenly dropped his sophomore album To Pimp A Butterfly a week before the scheduled release date ones to WAtch sofi de lA torre The Spanish singer-songwriter drops the title track to her EP That Isn't You this month 'That Isn't You', the title track from Sofi's upcoming EP, is a down-tempo take on dreamy alt-R&B – think Banks laced with a California vibe - that has already won the approval of Paramore's Hayley Williams. Sofi's raw emotional overtones mirror the introspective life reflections common to us all; both inclusive and yet isolated. Her track 'Vermillion', created in collaboration with Finnish producer/songwriters Jonas Karlsson and Axel Ehnström, has already received wide critical acclaim. Heralded by Billboard as a "total game-changer", it was featured on The Guardian's playlist, as well as being featured on Grimes' blog. The track was also remixed by deep house producers Crom & Thanh and subsequently played on BBC Radio 1 by none other than Tiësto. Involved in every aspect of her artistry, Sofi writes her own music, shoots her own pictures, designs the artwork, edits the videos and takes care of styling. She also lists her hobbies as making music and eating hamburgers, so she's definitely our kind of girl. The EP marks a change in direction from her earlier work, which showcase a more delicate, acoustic guitar-based sound. As she has said of her musical shift, "At some point, every song that I wrote sounded like the one before, because I find it quite difficult to innovate writing on the guitar." An artist whose talents seem to have no bounds, her EP is a masterful piece of work that truly looks set to bring her the attention she deserves. Hip hop maverick MF DOOM will bring his unique flow to Brixton, and Lapalux, who will release his second album on FlyLo's Brainfeeder label offers up electronic beats. Multi- talented Dublab member Kutmah, and experimental hip hop group Shabazz Palaces complete the bill. This is FlyLo's only London show of 2015, and he's crammed a festival-sized amount into one night, so you don't want to sleep on this one! flying lotus @ brixton AcAdemy FlyLo brings a bigger, badder live show to Brixton on May 1st HIPHOP/ RNB In line with the trend for sudden album drops, Kendrick's latest album appeared early, and to an overwhelmingly positive response. It has broken Spotify records with 9.6 million streams on its first day, and topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. To Pimp A Butterfly is strong on jazz and funk, a dramatically different sound to that of Good Kid m.A.A.d City, and thinkpieces have popped up all over the web dissecting the lyircs, especially the legendary Tupac dialogue which features on 'Mortal Man'. It's an extraordinary piece of work and is sure to be one of the albums of 2015. Again, all hail King Kendrick.
