GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 27 • 16 with these guys, they're on the same page, their communication has been great, they're physical, it becomes pretty exciting to watch those guys play together. "They're really physical right now. They're low. They're playing with power. They're playing with quickness. That's a great group." NEW LOOKS Anthony Brown stuck out more than usual during the jersey scrimmage on April 11. This time, it wasn't because of his play at cornerback. Brown was the only Purdue player wearing the team's new anthracite uniform. The dark gray jersey and pants had white numbers on the jersey and a black stripe on the pants. Brown wore the look with the team's black helmet. "It was crazy. Coach came to me and said, 'You're going to be in a different uniform,' and I was like, 'OK,'" Brown said after the scrim- mage. "We already knew we had gray unis, but I didn't know I was wearing it (that day). When I saw it, I was like, 'OK.' "But I'm about winning games. We can have all the uniforms we want, but if we don't win, it doesn't mean anything." Purdue will add the uniform to its rotation of white jerseys and white pants, black jer - seys and black pants and gold pants. The Boiler- makers currently have gold and black helmets. Hazell said before the spring there was no cur- rent plans to add gray to the mix. "It's pretty sharp," Hazell said of the gray uniform. On Saturday in the spring game, center Ku- gler pretended to have an equipment issue with his helmet and headed to the sidelines in the middle of a series to get it fixed. Instead, Purdue Pete brought Kugler a new helmet: A white one with a gold stripe down the center, a number de- cal on one side and Pur- due's train logo on the other. It's likely the Boilermakers will wear that white helmet for the sea- son opener against Marshall. It'd be the first time the program has worn white helmets and the first time it's had a number on them since 1970 (with the exception of a Rose Bowl throw-back uniform in 2006). GOOD SHAPE The Boilermakers exited spring without many major injuries. Other than players who didn't play a snap all spring while rehab- bing from surgeries — Danny Anthrop, Frankie Williams, Prince, Cermin and Elijah Sindelar high- light that list — Purdue had only a handful of players in the pit much of the spring. The most serious in- jury has running back Keith Byars out for four months after breaking a bone in his shoulder during the jersey scrimmage. Receivers DeAn- gelo Yancey and Anthony Mahoun- gou missed a handful of practices with a knee and Achilles' injury, and defensive linemen Evan Panfil and Ra'Zahn Howard had shoulder in- juries. But all four of those players were active for the spring game. By the end of spring ball, An- throp also was working with the rest of the receivers in individual drills and even ran some routes. Sindelar participated in individual drills all spring and threw some with receivers, too. Both players are targeting May to be cleared full-go from December ACL surgeries. Also, offensive lineman Jason Tretter has retired due to lingering knee issues. He didn't participate in the spring. j Tom Campbell Purdue had a couple new looks this spring, with Robert Kugler (above) showing off a new white hel- met at the spring game and Anthony Brown (right) wearing the gray uniform at the jersey scrimmage.
