As the soil temperature increases more nutrient is released, directly in line with the requirements of the grass. It is a unique feature of the product that while there must always be soil moisture present to solubilise the released nutrients, additional rainfall or irrigation will not increase the rate of release. The coating thickness is designed to let the product release over a five- to six- month period from one application, providing a steady, but not excessive nutrient release to the grass that results in consistent, maintainable growth. The benefits of the nutrient releasing in this fashion are widely recognised as increased turf safety upon application to unirrigated areas, minimal leaching during excessive periods of soil moisture, and consistent grass growth that withstands wear and generates good sward thickness. Potassium nitrate technology Potassium nitrate is one of the world`s most widely used straight fertilisers in both agriculture and horticulture, and its usage in the UK and Ireland turf market was pioneered and established by Headland. Potassium nitrate in its raw state has an analysis of 13+0+46 and therefore provides a small amount of nitrate nitrogen, in combination with a high level of potassium. In this form it is very quickly available in the soil and taken up by the plant resulting in high tissue levels of potassium and stronger, hardier growth, without producing excessive clippings. By utilising the high specific analysis of potassium nitrate, Multigreen is able to provide higher potassium levels in the finished product compared to many other controlled-release fertilisers, offering more nutrient per application. As the potassium nitrate prill is able to be resin coated, Multigreen can provide not only a controlled supply of nitrogen (as both urea and nitrate) but also controlled release potassium, depending on the analysis selected. This steady supply of controlled- release K adds to the strength and stress resistance of the sward. An additional benefit of potassium nitrate is that it provides chemical oxygen to the soil upon application, thereby minimising or reducing the risk of anaerobic conditions developing. This is obviously an issue on waterlogged soils, affecting turf quality particularly during the autumn and winter period. Clipping yield Independent trial work with Multigreen was conducted to compare its performance with other slow release and conventional fertilisers and demonstrated excellent longevity and significantly reduced clipping yield. Reduction in clippings while maintaining a healthy, dense sward can be an important factor in cost-effectively maintaining outfield turf areas. Cutting turf is labour intensive and reducing the required number of cuts by more efficient use of fertiliser has benefits to both budget and environment. Equally, the need for just a single application per season makes controlled-release fertilisers an attractive option. Suitable for areas such as golf tees and fairways, sports pitches, racecourses, and domestic lawns, controlled-release technology can provide a high quality result, in a cost-effective way. Once applied, the groundsman can look forward to a gentle, consistent release of nutrients that is matched to the needs of his sward.
