before in the season opener.
That'd be the case whether the
Boilermakers opt for junior Austin
Appleby, redshirt freshman David
Blough or true freshman Elijah Sin-
delar. Danny Etling is the only player
in the group who has been a Game 1
starter, but he'd likely need to make
big strides this summer to get back
up into that consideration by fall.
But Etling was included in a ro-
tation this spring with Appleby, who
started the final seven games of last
season, and Blough. Sindelar didn't
participate in 7-on-7 or team peri-
ods this spring while recovering
from ACL surgery.
Each healthy quarterback showed
signs of improvement, Hazell and
Shoop said. But neither would say
who exited the spring as No. 1,
which is in line with how they've
handled the quarterback depth chart
publicly throughout Hazell's tenure.
Unofficially during team peri-
ods over the 15 practices, Appleby
completed 63 percent of his passes,
Etling was at 66 percent and Blough
at 71. Appleby also got the most
snaps with the first-team offense —
nearly half his throws were against
the No. 1 defense — while Blough,
for example, had only 15 percent of
his passes with the No. 1 offense.
Though the QBs rotated, Apple-
by got the most snaps with the 1s,
Etling with the 2s and Blough with
the 3s.
It appears, though, that Appleby
has the edge over Blough at this
point if, for nothing else, his game
