GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 5 23 be able to do that. You've got to be able to keep squatting and not lose your legs and your butt. I think it'll pay divi- dends in the long run." Q: What was the message you left the team with heading into the summer? Hazell: "I talked to them about all the work that they have to do this summer. They can't feel like, 'We had a pretty good spring.' Uh uh. They've got to really crush themselves for the next eight weeks, 10 weeks, however long it is to get themselves ready to compete at the highest level. That's what this summer is about." Q: So it's a physical part but also … Hazell: "Keep learning the game. Figure out all those little dif- ference-makers. What's the differ- ence-maker in this particular play? I think that's very important." Q: Is the group better as far as knowledge of the game compared to when you got here? Hazell: "Oh, absolutely. I think they're way better. They're way better because there's been an em- phasis on learning the game, but I think the coaches have done a good job of teaching the game. Not just, 'OK, this is what you have,' but this is about the whole concept, offen- sively, defensively, special teams. I think they know how to study better. They know how to look at film better. They grab each other to look at film, which was not happening very much when we first started. They realize the importance, and I think that's helped us and will continue to help us. Getting in there, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, watching this scheme, this technique. It's important to them now. I really believe that." j @purdueunion PurdueMemorialUnion union.purdue.edu WELCOME to the Purdue Memorial Union meet. stay. eat. learn. play.
