Ja'Whaun Bentley was already a cut above the rest last season, when he proved to a be game-changer as a true freshman. Now, he's about 10 pounds heavier, while maintain- ing the same athleticism, he says, so he could be even more physical in the middle of the defense. He's not the most vocal guy — it's just not his personality — but he's come a long way, most say, in his leadership since being thrust into the role midway through last season. Strongside Linebacker 1. Jimmy Herman 29 6-4, 230, Jr. 2. Dezwan Polk-Campbell 19 6-3, 210, So. Middle Linebacker 1. Ja'Whaun Bentley 4 6-2, 260, So. 2. Garrett Hudson 16 6-3, 240, So. Weakside Linebacker 1. Danny Ezechukwu 36 6-2, 246, So. 2. Andy James Garcia 42 6-0, 228, Jr. Three times last season, Anthony Brown dropped what appeared to be sure inter- ceptions, the last — against Indiana — possibly giving the Hoosiers momentum enough for a second-half comeback. He worked to turn those pass breakups into interceptions this spring and had two picks. That's progress. If he does that in the fall, he very well might be one of the better cornerbacks in the league. Cornerback 1. Anthony Brown 9 5-11, 190, Sr. 2. Race Johnson 46 5-11, 180, So. Leroy Clark made the move from cornerback, where he played the first two seasons at Purdue (with mixed results, at best) to safety be- fore the start of the spring. He says it's a more natural position, particu- larly considering it's where he spent his time before arriving at Purdue. The Boilermakers could use the help at safety, where they're replacing their top three — injured Frankie Williams has moved back to corner and two others graduate — from last season. Of course, Purdue needs depth at cornerback, too. Cornerback 1. Da'Wan Hunte 2 5-9, 183, So. 2. Antonio Blackmon 25 6-0, 181, R-Fr. Free Safety 1. Robert Gregory 7 6-1, 219, Jr. 2.
