GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 5 43 Thomas Meadows due to depart. Additionally, wide receivers will be needed. Purdue's only wide receiver signees for the 2015 class came from the junior college market, so the ranks at that position will need to be made younger, as they will be at defensive end, where late signee Chazmyn Turner is the pro- gram's lone incoming high school recruit. The offensive line — Purdue has told prospects it's intent on taking a center — and defensive line may need the most attention, though. The secondary, too. Two positions that may not: Running back, where Purdue just signed three recruits, and quarter- back. It's been a long time since Pur- due last opted against signing a quarterback in a recruiting class, but with four of them on the roster on scholarship, and none of them seniors, and limited availability, if there's ever a year for Purdue to pass, this is it. Recent Purdue signing classes have been aided by the program's camp structure, including an an- nual elite camp on campus that's been very well received by pros- pects since its inception. This summer, Purdue will ex- pand. With satellite camps — camps "hosted" by schools in other states to bring the events to recruits who might otherwise not be able to at- tend them on campus — being the new big thing in recruiting, Purdue will sponsor a camp in Nashville, a city it's put a significant emphasis on in recruiting and been received well in. Plans for a camp in Chicago fell through. "They've become a good deal and a big deal and you need them to be competitive at some times," Parker said. "Some colleges are doing them more than others. The rules are going to change for sure because some people abuse it. ... We wanted to see kids who typi- cally couldn't get to West Lafayette to know what the Purdue brand is. Chicago fell through because of lo- gistics. "Nashville got brought up be- cause it was in our footprint, per se. We've done a good job down there and finally made a name. It also is a key to get to Atlanta and compete with other schools down there, which would cut our trips in half. It's a necessary evil. Nashville is the key to the south for us." Penn State and Michigan in the Big Ten have been two of the most aggressive programs in taking their camps nationwide, upsetting the SEC — which no one will soon lose sleep over, most likely — be- cause it has a rule barring such practices. Michigan, under new coach Jim Harbaugh, will host satellite camps in nine cities, including Indianap- olis. The NCAA has promised to dis- cuss the issue of satellite camps moving forward. In the meantime, Purdue will play the game same as some of its peers. j Buy a Subaru and Keep Indiana Driving.
