GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 5 53 FEB. 3, 2007 (VOL. 17, ISSUE 18) The relatively new world of orga- nized raucous student sections was now front and center in Mackey Arena. And it was on dis- play as David Teague addressed the Paint Crew moments after he had undressed Illinois with a career-best 28-point effort. Teague became a favorite, especially in his senior year, and especially after he topped the performance against the Illini with a 32-point barrage against hated IU just 19 days later. FEB. 2, 2008 (VOL. 18, ISSUE 17) There is nothing hotter than new love in life and in sports. And Purdue fans fell hard for Robbie Hummel and Co. in the winter of 2008 when the youthful Boilermakers made a surprising run to finish within an eyelash of the Big Ten crown. This image was taken from the Boilermakers' win over Wis- consin, made possible by Hummel's last-second blocked shot. It also set off a Mackey Arena celebration not seen in years as that raucous Paint Crew rushed the court. OCT. 17, 2008 (VOL. 19, ISSUE 7) When in doubt, turn to Drew Brees. At least that was our mindset when the 2008 football team was struggling to get victo- ries in Tiller's last season. After all, we want happy read- ers and no one in the history of the program has made Purdue fans smile more than Brees. That, and we were able to get an interview with the Super Bowl champion quarterback for the story, something that is nearly impos- sible for us to do today, had a little something to do with it. MARCH 27, 2010 (VOL. 20, ISSUE 22) Hummel and Brees, rarely if ever, disappointed Purdue fans and neither did Chris Kramer. The epitome of the Boilermaker work ethic, Kramer helped the Boilermakers get to the Sweet 16 when he willed himself to a game-winning layup to upset Texas A&M in one of the greatest individual plays in Boilermaker NCAA annals. There was no player who played with more heart from the second he put on a Pur- due uniform, and he will be forever loved by Boilermaker fans for it. APRIL/MAY 2011 (VOL. 21, ISSUE 5) After a whirlwind courtship that nearly landed him at Missouri, Painter returned to Purdue vow- ing to work to get his basketball program to an even higher level. As the text in the back- ground of the cover stated, he had helped the Boilermakers to a school-best 25-plus wins each of the past four seasons, and that had much to do with him earning a contract wor- thy of the upper-level coaches in college basketball.
