GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 5 54 OCT./NOV. 2011 (VOL. 22, ISSUE 2) The face of Purdue in the fall of 2011 was Hummel and the story was his comeback attempt after his second devastating knee injury. The return to a high level took a little longer than Hummel might have liked, but by the second half of the 2011-12 season, he was remarkably playing at an All-Big Ten level. He had led his team from the depths to one capable of doing damage in the NCAA Tournament. JULY/AUG. 2013 (VOL. 23, ISSUE 6) Coach Darrell Hazell was, and still is, in search of a culture shift in his football program. And before his first game was even played, he introduced his team and the rest of us to his "A Player's Manual." Few covers we have done had more pos- itive reaction than this one, possibly because the fan base was eager, if not desperate, to see Hazell's approach have success. Two seasons later, the seeds have been planted, but the crops are still awaiting harvest. Covers Story MARCH/APRIL 2014 (VOL. 24, ISSUE 4) Our annual football recruiting issue always runs the risk of shining the spotlight a little too brightly on an incoming signee. And in this case, Gelen Robinson is working to become an impact player for Hazell's program, but isn't quite there yet. Still, the need to get tougher, more dedicated play- ers in the program was Hazell's mantra at the time and remains a theme a year-plus later. NOV./DEC. 2014 (VOL. 25, ISSUE 2) We have one more cover to com- plete in the publishing year, so consider this our clubhouse lead- er. In late December, there was concern that the "Centerpiece" theme for A.J. Hammons would end up filed under wishful thinking. But Hammons came through with flying colors, something that can't always be said for the times we have incorrectly prognosti- cated on some of the nearly 550 covers since 1990.
