But in the Big Ten indoors in Feb- ruary, the women finished tied for third, their best since 2001, while the men were 11th, although the latter wasn't a particularly accurate indica- tor of progress. Perhaps a better mea- sure came at the last Big Ten outdoor championships in the spring, when the men finished fifth, their best since 2009. The women were third. "I think the first thing that he brought was a change in attitude," said Jones, who had been recruited by Jack Warner and his previous Purdue staff. "Before there was an attitude of complacency, like it was OK to be do- ing as poorly as we did. He set a stan- dard that it's not OK, that we're better than that. He definitely sparked our engines and gave us a belief in our- selves." Greene has adjusted Purdue's fo- cus in other ways. Whereas other Big Ten programs frequently recruit for distance events, perhaps buying in to the notion that northern programs can't be fast, Greene has sought out sprinters. Those were the athletes he coached while an assistant, then associate head coach, at Arkansas. And he feels they can be winners at Purdue, too. "You have to do something differ- ent in order to facilitate change," he said. "If you're not, you will get what you always got. Young people need to know that there is an expectation of them of what they have been given, (it's) not just a participatory thing. If we aren't able to put that in their mind, we are going to struggle. "… I want to win and I want to win here at Purdue. It means recruiting a different demographic, it means recruiting a different type of kid. It means recruiting a kid with a differ- ent, stronger mentality.
