in or lose, there's a time
to celebrate accomplishment
and effort — and to have a couple
of laughs along the way.
That was the message during the
third-annual Golden Pete Awards
April 26 at the Loeb Playhouse. Well
over a dozen awards were handed
out to Boilermaker student-athletes
during an event that has an Academy
Award/Golden Globe feel to it. It even
includes a gold carpet for all to walk
across when entering the theater.
"We have such expectations for you
on the playing field and you do of your-
self, but there is time to sit back and
enjoy yourself and have some fun,"
athletic director Morgan Burke said
when delivering his senior address.
The two-hour event, which was
dominated by well-produced videos
by the athletic department creative
services staff, had its humorous side.
Most of the laughter in the early part
of the program emanated from the
back-and-forth banter between co-
hosts Stephanie White, a women's
basketball legend, and Akin Ayodele,
a member of football's "Den of Defen-
sive Ends."
Later in the program, the team
videos competition drew much of the
attention. The clips were produced
in part by Boilermaker squads them-
selves and pitted a short vignette on
topics that had little or nothing to do
with the team itself.

Boilermaker greats Akin Ayodele and
Stephanie White served as co-hosts to
the Golden Pete Awards in late April.
They showed off their competitive side,
going one-on-one in basketball and in a
football-tossing contest.
