By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror The Westport Village Council will be awarding a contract to complete a Municipal Class C Envi- ronmental Assessment (EA) for the Rehabilitation /Expansion of the waste- water treatment system to AECOM. The company was one of three that submitted bids including McIntosh Perry Consulting Engi- neers Ltd. and WSP Glob- al Inc. "We each individually interpreted the proposals. It was evident in the first five minutes that we had all come to the same con- clusion," said Glen Allen, a retired engineer. He was a member of an evaluation committee which also included Coun- ties engineer Les Shep- herd and Village Clerk, Scott Bryce. The AECOM proposal included 1328 hours of program effort and more consultation which includ- ed seven presentations to council and six with the technical advisory com- mittee (TAC). "AECOM was selected based on value for level of effort on the project. Extensive depth of experi- ence was identified within the company as being available to support the project," stated the com- mittee's report. The purpose of the EA Derick Hodgson's dog Badger, was inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame on Monday for the rescue of his owner after a fall on Whitefish Lake in February 2014. The ten-year old Lab- Rottweiler mix pulled Hodgson 400 meters across the lake and up an incline to his home where he was able to call 911. That day in haste Hodg- son went out the door onto the ice without his jacket or his cell phone to cap- ture photographs of some eagles on the lake. On his way Hodgson fell, hit the ice hard and broke his leg in two places as well as rupturing a ten- don. The dog stayed by his master's side while he went in and out of con- sciousness. Then Hodgson thought of the pair of them in their skijoring days. The dog's earlier training paid off for Hodgsdon in spades. With a cry of 'mush Badger mush' Hodgson slowly got dragged to safety. "I grabbed his collar. He started to pull. We lived to tell the tale," said Hodgson who, this week, was in Toronto with Bad- ger for the hall of fame ceremony. Since its inception in 1968, the Purina Animal Hall of Fame has hon- oured pets and service ani- mals for their remarkable feats of bravery, from alerting humans to life- threatening medical emer- gencies, to saving them from extreme conditions. In the last 47 years, 168 animals have been induct- ed, including 140 dogs, 27 cats – and even a horse. The 2015 Inductees have joined these ranks. Through their keen intuition and sense of duty, animals have shown they understand and are com- pelled to protect us when we need them the most. "Just when I thought I wouldn't be able to make it off of that frozen lake alive, Badger did whatever it took to rescue and bring me to safety," said Hodg- son. He has had more than a year of recovery and phys- iotherapy to get his strength and mobility back after the incident. "Badger saved my life and I'm so grateful to Puri- na for honouring him in this way and telling our story," he said.
