CREDIT WHERE IT'S DUE Dear The Wolverine: This spring, the women's gymnas- tics team crushed all comers to win another Big Ten championship and performed brilliantly at the NCAA Championship, regionals and semi- finals. The physical and mental dis- cipline of these athletes is incredible and worth celebrating. Yet in the May edition of The Wolverine, you devoted 42 pages to football and just four column inches to women's gymnastics. I read The Wolverine primarily for your foot- ball news. But perhaps you could scale back the football coverage to something a bit less — like 40 pages — so football fans like me can better appreciate the full breadth of Michi- gan's athletic accomplishments. David VanLuven Delmar, N.Y. Fair criticism, David. Bev Plocki's team certainly did its part this year, and been a strong one around the athletic campus for a long, long time. We do try to shine a spotlight on top performing Olympic sports programs, while meet- ing the ravenous demands for news on football and basketball. CHANGE THE MUSIC Dear The Wolverine: I am a season ticket holder and go to all the games and love everything about Michigan football except the pregame music. Rap is crap. I know they need music for the young crowd, but how about the adults that make up at least 80 percent of fans? One song that would appeal and fit the Michigan program is "Love Is Blue" by Paul Mauriat, and other songs that appeal to the older crowd. It would be greatly appreci- ated if you would relay this message to the proper department. Go Blue. Bob Kowal Via the Internet Your suggestion is a classic, Bob, no doubt, albeit perhaps a tad laid back for a fired-up football Saturday. If they went that route, we'd be getting a few more letters. ❏   FROM OUR READERS Sophomore All-American Talia Chiarelli and the U-M women's gymnastics team had a very strong season, winning the Big Ten title and finishing fourth in an NCAA Semifinal.
