Dear Readers, I am sending you this letter from Kruger National Park, South Africa. Read my blog to see some of my photos and learn about my experiences. Studying in the park has been a fantastic experience both academically and photographically. The opportunity to live in a national park is priceless and it has made me reflect on my photography. I have realized the importance of getting outside to practice my photographic skills in the field almost every day. It is easy to be caught up in homework and other responsibilities, and to forget to take time outside. This month, even if it is cold outside, I encourage you to set a goal of spending 30 minutes outside each day with your camera. If you are restricted to your backyard, try photographing the same scene each day to see how it changes with the weather, or explore patterns in household objects. I assure you that time outside will make you a better photographer and maybe even a happier individual! IN THIS ISSUE Evan Graff writes about his love of bird watching, Erica Wills shares an Arctic adventure that changed her life, and our master in the making, Tristan Willis, describes taking photos with a film camera in the digital age. There is also an article by Duke student, Maya Robinson, featur- ing programs and internships that you may want to consider as summer options. If you have any other opportunities you would like to share with our readers, please email me. Finally, the top ten winners of our most recent photo contest are revealed on page 29 of this issue. SEND IN YOUR ENTRIES to the NBP Students Photo Contest beginning on December 5, 2009, and running through March 1, 2010. The Grand Prize is a SIGMA lens of the winner's choice valued at U.S. $650. In addition to the grand prize, another nine of the best photos will be selected for publication in the next issue of N ATURE'S BEST PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENTS ONLINE. Entry is FREE and you may upload up to 20 of your best images online at www.naturesbeststudents.com/takeaction. Best Wishes from South Africa!
