the throws and jumps."
While the men suffered in sprints, the women thrived in large
part to Devynn Charlton. The sophomore won the 100-meter dash,
finished second in the 100-meter hurdles and ran the third leg of
Purdue's gold medal-winning 4x100-meter relay to lead Purdue to a
sixth-place finish.
"Devynn is a warrior," Greene said. "She isn't afraid and doesn't
doubt anything. If you line up with her, you're going to have to bring
your A game. When she ran 11.37, she went for it and was like, 'If they
want it, you're going to have to come get it.' "
Charlton captured the 100 title after finishing second at the event
at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and qualifying second in prelims.
"It means a whole lot going in as the underdog," Charlton said. "It
speaks so much to the program I'm in that I'm getting that much better
at the right time."
Several of Charlton's teammates had impressive showings as
well, as Symone Black captured the title in the
400-meter hurdles, and Briona Thomas, Vanessa
McLeod, Carmiesha Cox and Hope Schmelzle
earned points in running events in addition to
the 4x400 relay.
The women would have scored even more
points if not for the hamstring injury Cox suffered
in the 100 finals. She was pulled out of the 200
finals in hopes of preserving her for the NCAA
Championships May 28-30 in Jacksonville.
"At the end of the day, the women were very solid across the board,"
Greene said. "With a healthy Carmiesha, we would have been top 2 or
top 3."
