Most towns have at least one, and many have two or three, of- ten near each other. Re-find, a Salem store specializing in new and resale eclectic separates, recently joined consignment mainstay Modern Millie's and relative newcomer Mighty Aphrodite, all within a few blocks' walk. Re-find owner Shelley Matthews, whose retail background includes Lucky Brands, Coach, and Anne Fontaine, opened her store in March 2011 and says that clustering is a good thing. "The more options in a town, the more it will draw cus- tomers," she says. "If there are three or four stores, people will make more of an effort to come—maybe spend the afternoon, stop for coffee somewhere, and meet some friends." Matthews seems to be hoping to almost single-handedly turn Salem, which has been her hometown for the past 12 years, into a resale Mecca. She has already signed a lease for a space around the corner from Re-find, where she plans to open a men's consignment shop this spring, and if all goes well, three more stores, including one specializing in furni- ture, will follow over the next five years.
