The program aims to ensure that America has a skilled workforce and is active in 52 states with local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. In March, 85 students from WACTC competed in over 28 Skills USA State competi- tion events. The WACTC had 17 medal winners. Two students won gold: Amber Seminick for T-shirt design and Aylson Picard for photog- raphy. Accompanying them to Kentucky for nationals in June will be Teagan Orlando, who was selected during a statewide meeting as one of only six state officers. Seminick entered the T-shirt contest with the challenge of creating a design using only four colors that represents Rhode Island. "I then needed to make it digitally using Illustrator and print it onto a T-shirt," she explained at a presenta- tion on the awards before the Woonsocket School Committee. Seminick designed a shirt with an anchor using the col- ors yellow, blue and grey. It was judged against 14 other entries at a competition at CCRI in Warwick. Seminick had to present the shirt, explaining her decisions and color choices. After receiving the gold, she'll represent both Rhode Island and WACTC. Picard, meanwhile, com- peted against 15 or so other media students specializing in photography and Photoshop. "We had to edit a series of photos with proper correc- tions, and create a surreal composite of a few of our own photographs taken on the campus in a timed ses- sion," Picard explained. Picard exhibited two prints of photos taken during her time in Rwanda, Africa, in February. Both of her photo- graphs were taken on site of an elementary school. Orlando won the position as a state officer with a speech about her story of switching schools to pursue career and technical education, and her personal motivation. "I take school seriously, working for everything, and not taking anything for granted," she told the judges. "I motivate peers in the class- room, encouraging them to do their work, along with helping them either if asked for or if I notice them strug- gling." As a state officer, Orlando will serve as the ambassador of students enrolled in career and technical education in SkillsUSA.
