After years of declining numbers, the rival Athens District Minor Hockey Association (ADMHA) and North Leeds Minor Hockey Association (NLMHA) have amalga- mated for the coming sea- son. The executive boards of both organizations came to an agreement last week and the NLMH member- ship was informed by email Monday night. A meeting is set for this Monday, June 15 at 8 p.m. at Westport Arena to explain the changes and address any concerns. The new association, which has yet to be named, will see all players from Novice to Midget come together while Initiation programs will continue to operate on their own in North Leeds and Athens. Over the past decade both associations have seen a drop in enrolment, which has reduced the number of teams they have been able to ice, including difficulty icing competi- tive teams at the Rep. level. "According to the num- ber of players registered at this moment, there should be little problem icing competitive teams at each Rep level," the email from NLMH President Tara Thompson said. "This decision was made by the executives of ADMHA and NLMHA and is supported by Dis- trict. It is the best opportu- nity for all members mov- ing forward. It has become increasingly difficult to ice competitive teams at the proper level for players to both compete and have fun. Critical decisions had to be made," the email read. Amalgamations have already occurred in other associations including Perth and Lanark, and Car- dinal, Prescott and Spencerville, who now form the South Grenville Minor Hockey Associa- tion, one of the most suc- cessful associations in the Upper Canada association. For the first year, the executive will consist of a combination of members from both associations. Going forward, elections will be held each year for executive positions. The deadline to apply for any of the Rep coach- ing positions (Atom, Pee- wee, Bantam and Midget) is July 15.
