6 Issue 76 / 2015 GUESTLIST guestlist.net Ireland made history by becoming the first country to legalise same-sex marriage through popular vote Good news: IrIsh vote yes for Gay marrIaGe This yes vote marks a huge step in Ireland's journey to becoming a more liberal society. Gay marriage is a big issue in the traditionally conservative, majority Catholic country, where homosexuality wasn't decriminalised until the 1990s. With voter turnout at over 60% the referendum was passed by more than 62%, with many Irish people travelling home from all over the world to cast their vote. Only one of Ireland's 43 parliamentary constituencies – Roscommon-South Leitrim – failed to pass it, and the yes vote reached over 70% in many parts of Dublin. Taoiseach Enda Kenny said of the result: "In the privacy of the ballot box, the people made a public statement. With today's vote we have disclosed who we are. We are a generous, compassionate, bold and joyful people who say yes to inclusion, yes to generosity, yes to love, yes to gay marriage." Rainbow flags flew proudly around Dublin Castle, where people celebrated with a huge street party. Although a happy day for the Irish people, the historic result also threw the situation across in the border into sharper relief – there is still no marriage equality in Northern Ireland. Perhaps this vote will inspire a change there too. The Fitzrovia branch has introduced a new scheme to make it easier for customers to buy drinks for the homeless Good eGGs: Black sheep coffee Customers at Black Sheep Coffee have the option to buy an additional drink at a discounted price, and they then get a sticker to post on the 'free coffee board' outside the store. A homeless person can take a sticker off the board and exchange it for a hot drink at the counter. The shop owners have said that the project also provides some social contact for the homeless as well as giving them something to drink. It's proved successful so far, with a number of homeless people in the area becoming regulars at the shop, and they have now expanded the scheme to the Aldgate branch.
