The outside interpretation was that Kelly wants to lower standards or find excuses, but he retorts that is a falsehood. "First of all, you don't talk about those things unless you know a place," Kelly told BGI. "I didn't know Notre Dame when I got here. I knew about Notre Dame, but I never went to Notre Dame, so you can't talk about something that you don't know anything about. "I needed to know Notre Dame before I could talk about it, and then when you love something, it's easier to talk about it. If you don't love something, you're just kinda 'Eh, who cares?' But I love Notre Dame — and what we're not doing enough is providing the resources for our student-athletes when we get here. "I don't want to change their curriculum, I don't want to change their experience. Our kids benefit from the air that they breathe when they step on this campus. It's an in- credible opportunity that they've been given because of their talents." Kelly said he was not implying that the stu- dent-athletes who are admitted can't succeed academically at Notre Dame, because many others who are admitted, including children of graduates, get breaks for admissions others might not. The crux is because of the intense year-round demands that have grown with their sport, lightening a semester load from 15 credits to a still full-time 12 might give them a better chance to thrive in the classroom. "When we get home at 4 a.m. [from a road game], we're not like anybody else here," Kelly said. "We put in more time in football in one of the most competitive academic class- rooms in the country. So we need to get more resources, and that's what I'm pushing for. "There's been open dialogue about it, com- munication about how do we avoid what we've had for the last couple years, with Jerian Grant and Everett Golson and the five guys. … Let's provide them more resources so they don't take shortcuts." The Irish head coach also emphasized he has no qualms with the school's admissions people.
