The vessel, which Burnham constructed using largely recycled and salvaged materials, recalls Gloucester's maritime legacy and brings history to life for many passengers; Burnham offers educational sails for children and adults, and the schooner often serves as a research and teaching location for the Gloucester Maritime Center. With public sails, private charters, and educational opportunities, passengers are sure to find comfort, fun, and fascinating history on the open sea. So what makes Salem's Witch City race stand out? The costumes, for one. Runners are encouraged to dress in their Halloween best, adding an element of the fun and frolicsome (and occasionally frightful) to the athletic proceedings. Prizes are awarded to the scariest and most creative costumes. Sea breezes, beautiful surroundings, and a relatively flat course make it a perfect race for veteran runners photograph by Steve Borichevsky Schooner Ardelle
