Thick forest, riverside walks, open fields, horse and running trails, and special vistas like the Flowering Pond, Point of Rocks, and The Punch Bowl (a kettle hole) make it the ideal place for nature and recreation lovers to spend a few hours exploring. The former estate is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and is one of the area's most beloved and well-used parks. In addition to its natural beauty, it hosts performances and workshops by 36-year-old Theatre in the Open. 74 Curzon Mill Rd., Newburyport, 978-465-7223, mass.gov R E A D E R S' C H O I C E M A U D S L AY S T A T E P A R K "It's hard to describe how incredibly beautiful, quaint, and unique Maudslay State Park is…idyllic paths and old stone bridges—it almost doesn't feel real. It's like a movie set for a Colin Firth period drama." –K.J.
