62 | AUGUST 2015 nshoremag.com DINE NEW RESTAURANT THE BANCROFT At this Burlington steak house, serious food and a touch of eccentric- ity work in perfect harmony. While The Bancroft does offer traditional steak house staples, like a whopping 40-ounce tomahawk rib steak for two, along with sides like garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach, the sophisticated touch of executive chef Mario Capone—whose resumé includes working for Lydia Shire and Daniel Boulud—lightens and modernizes the classics while broadening the offer- ings. The posh décor features mis- matched furniture, from custom-made plush banquettes to chairs wrapped in cowhide. Even the floors are a patchwork of different materials, from tile to throw rugs to dark wood. But everything works together to create a warm, sophisticated experience that leaves diners plotting a return trip. 15 Third Ave., Burlington, 781-221-2100, the-bancroft.com R E A D E R S' C H O I C E N O . 8 K I T C H E N & S P I R I T S "No. 8 delivers really creative ver- sions of mostly classic American food, aiming well beyond the usual suburban fare. We never made it to the entrées because the small plates were so tasty. The cornbread with maple pork belly butter is ridiculously good, and I don't usually like cornbread. Also, the house-cured meats and charcuterie were outstanding (we marveled at the clean-tasting pickled vegetable accom- paniment). Loved the octopus tempura, the HM pastrami hash, and the roasted beet salad with cold smoked yogurt. Every dish included some original twist. I rarely see this level of detail outside of the city. The cocktails were equally inspired—I had the Lion's Mouth." –J.K. 37 Main St., Amesbury, 978-792-5476, no8kitchen.com photographs by Darren Pellegrino Above and below, The Bancroft
