The Eastern Ontario Wardens' Caucus (EOWC) passed a motion last week supporting Ontario's doctors as they advocate to stop govern- ment cuts to patient care. The motion came after Ontario Medical Associa- tion President Dr. Mike Toth met with the Eastern Ontario Wardens' Caucus in Pembroke and outlined how the government's imposed changes to doc- tors and medical services are impacting patient care. "We are all acutely aware that this is a critical time for Ontario's health care system," said Dr. Toth. "At a time when there are more than 800,000 Ontarians still without a family doctor and 140,000 new residents are being added into the system every year, the government is in the process of implementing unilateral restrictions and cuts in an effort to balance its budget. They are putting their budget ahead of patients." A solar developer seek- ing municipal support for eight 500kW ground mount solar energy pro- jects is deferring the appli- cations. Abundant Energy Busi- ness Development Man- ager Rob Hitchcock was seeking municipal support for the projects which would provide each of the local property owners with $100,000 over 20 years. Hitchcock sought the deferral after a Rideau Lakes staff report recom- mended the township deny the request for municipal support. Municipal support for a solar project increases an applicant's chances of suc- cess in the list of criteria to be awarded a contract under the current Feed in Tariff (FIT) rules, but denying support doesn't mean the province won't approve it anyway. The proposed 500kW projects are each 1/20th the size of nine 10MW solar farms already operat- ing in the township. Rideau Lakes Planning Advisory Committee accepted the request for deferral. From the Narrows lock station to Brass Point Bridge, the number of vessels increased by 36% and the number of vessels mooring increased by 55% from 2014. The period covers 17 days in May including three weekends compared to three weekends and 16 days in 2014. This year mooring was up significantly at New- boro and at Chaffey's. Newboro's overnight stays increased to 73 com- pared to 45 in 2014. At Chaffey's overnight moor- ings increased 32 from 17 last year. The number of vessels passing through the lock stations increased in a similar manner with 157 in Newboro this year com- pared to 117 last year. Chaffey's lockages increased from 76 last Henry Millar and Ivy McCulloch play at the Westport Lions Beach last week.
