STARRINKS.COM JULY.AUGUST.2015 / 21 all the same as their home arena. Even more beneficial is the treatment center readily available for injured players. Hixon said going above and beyond is a way to pay appreciation to the hard-working NHL club. "You're capped on what you can spend on players, but you're not capped on how you can treat them," said Hixon. "The amenities we provide here for every player really makes this facility a special place to show our appreciation." Having the support and presence of the Penguins ultimately affects grassroots hockey, too. "The Pittsburgh Penguins have really helped grow the game," said Herr. "We all know that you need a large population of hockey players in order to get high- end players in the end. The Penguins and surrounding organizations have done a really good job growing the game at the grassroots level. I think that's not only going to help hockey in the area, but the facility itself. "If you don't have any players, there's no one to develop." That NHL encouragement extends off the ice, too. While athletes from the community are training, their view from above looks out on to the rink where the Penguins practice. "When you're riding the bike or run- ning on the treadmill, you can be watching Sidney Crosby practice," said Herr. He adds that being surrounded by elite ath- letes during a patient/player's rehabilitation acts as an incentive to work harder to com- plete the program and get back on the ice. "It's an encouragement unlike any other." But at the end of the day, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex has been designed for the people of Pittsburgh. "It was a fantastic day for the commu- nity of Pittsburgh when UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex opened," said Herr.
