Instead of watching TV or checking social media, this is the perfect time for some maintenance and repair. Every building is different, but here are a few common tasks that everyone should be able to get done during the slight offseason. JULY First things first: make a list. Go through your building and make a note of things that need to be inspected, updated and fixed. Include cosmetic improvements and safety items. Area: Public Domain (Lobby, Restrooms, Concessions, Party Rooms, Viewing and Spectator Areas) □ How are the walls looking? Could they use a fresh paint job? □ Are the tabletops intact? Are they scratched or chipped to the point where they need to be fixed or replaced? □ Are the benches and chairs sturdy? Legs aren't too wobbly or seats too cracked? □ Are all hot dog, nacho and popcorn machines clean and functional? Is your equipment in good condition? □ Are all the toilets, sinks and hand-drying stations (paper towels or air) all in working condition? Area: Skaters Zone (Rink, Locker Rooms, Officials and Coaches Room) □ Are the kick plates free of gaps, bumps and kinks? □ Are dasher boards looking fresh or are they in need of repair? □ Does the glass sit tight on the cap rail? How about the stanchions or seamless dividers between the panes of glass? □ Are the toilets, sinks and showerheads all in working condition? □ Does everything in the scorekeeper's box work? Area: What Meets the Eye (Building Exterior, Entryways and Parking lots) □ Are doors and windows in working condition? Are they clean? Does a door need a fresh coat of paint? □ Is the facility sign in good condition? Does it light up properly? □ Do the parking lot lights work and illuminate fully? □ Have you filled potholes in the parking lot? Are the curbs still intact? □ Are parking spaces, including handicap and fire lanes, clearly designated? Is the signage for no parking and handicap spaces noticeable? AUGUST As the summer starts to wind down, start prepping for the season. Make sure all equipment and areas are tuned up and safe for operation.
