46 SXSW V2V 2015 Time Donatello 1: Mentor Sessions Build Your Startup like a Cultural Architect The Rise of Maker Millionaires Your brand voice is pivotal to your ultimate success: it's the most important tool to inspire and unite teams in a shared vision. It's an opportunity to leverage your brand's unique traits and to transcend industry norms. The secret to great service brands (like Starbucks, Nordstrom and Nespresso) is that they inspire the customer experience through their teams. Being a cultural architect is about re-programming your cultural code to inspire your people to take care of your customers in a personable, car- ing and authentic manner. Leave behind the status quo and shift to a customer-centric methodology that's driven by a love for your internal customers—your employees. This session will also cover startup case studies that determine if an inherent culture is more successful than a company that pivots to a strong, internal culture later in its journey. Strategies to pivot will be discussed for those who have established startups. Software startups are not the only multi-million dollar businesses and producing world-changing innovations. Mark Hatch, author of The Maker Movement Manifesto and CEO of TechShop (the first, largest, and most popular makerspace with locations nationwide), sees the maker business as the next big business. He has seen this phenomenon firsthand with companies that built prototypes at TechShop and become huge, profitable successes, including Square, valued at $5B, Oru Kayak (a foldable kayak) that raised $440k on Kickstarter and another $500k from Shark Tank, Lumio (a modern book lamp) and Theradome (a FDA-approved laser helmet), which each raised nearly half a million dollars via crowdfunding, and Embrace (an infant warmer) that recently attracted funding from Beyoncé. Prototypes that would have cost $100k in the past have been made at TechShop for $1,000. Hatch will discuss the business of making and the new innovation rules for entrepreneurs.
