34 Issue 77 / 2015 DNB guestlist.net 2014 was arguably his best year to date after signing to Hospital Records and dropping a double album series, Back to Basics. He has followed on from his success last year with an incredible debut essential mix on BBC Radio 1. Since the mix S.P.Y has constantly been circulating big tunes and remixes that have been dominating the clubs and regularly hitting the radio waves. He has managed to create drum & bass with a mainstream appeal whilst maintaining the raw, gritty edge. He has hit summer with a busy touring schedule and stacks of fresh material to play - S.P.Y is taking drum & bass to the masses and keeping it true to its spirit. It will leave behind a legacy unlike any other. For two decades it's been the go-to label for the hottest and freshest talent in drum & bass. The label quickly gained a reputation for pushing the darker, more forward thinking tech-step sound that began emerging at the time of its opening. Regularly signing up artists who go on to become big stars in the drum & bass scene, the back catalogue is filled to the brim with huge tracks from the likes of Chase & Status, Pendulum and Friction to name a few. Their events were the stuff of legends. Countless DJs performed career changing sets at their events that took over many iconic venues including Ministry of Sound, Cable, and their 11 year residence at The End. It's not the end just yet however, insisting that they will go out with a bang. This summer the crew will be hitting up a number of festivals including Outlook and Boomtown. Here in London they have an event at the Qube Project on August 28th with sets from Doc Scott, Randall B2B Stretch and Guestlist's very own Chef going back to back with Kane. The label will also drop series of big releases building up to their biggest line-up yet at an event in February 2016, dubbed the final chapter. It's about time Riya got her own release! The uplifting vocalist has featured countless times in drum & bass; her soft voice lays beautifully over bass heavy riddims. She is well respected among the elite of drum & bass and for good reason! 'Fear Bites' is an elevating summer blaster that features Dynamite MC, Villem and McLoed. Her light vocal floats atop the bloated bassline that rumbles throughout, and with a stripped back drum loop, it'll have you nodding your head before you even realise. The B-side, 'I Don't Need' features Break and is nice and gritty, just the way we like it! trAck of the Month riYA - feAr Bites feAt.
