DALLAS ALL SPORTS ASSOCIATION HONORS TATU by Amber Meesey D allas All Sports Asociation named Tatu the Dallas Sidekicks' Most Valuable Player for the 2002- 2003 season. He won the award also in 2001 and received the DASA's "Big D" Award in 1987. Tatu joins the ranks of Gordon Jago, who was named DASA Coach of the Year in 1987, and former teammate David Doyle, who was named the Dallas Sidekicks' MVP in 2002. Founded in 1956, DASA presents numerous awards to individuals and groups for outstanding achievements in sports. The group also contributes to many local charity events. According to (Nogueira, continued from page 19) Nogueira concludes his 11-year career in Milwaukee as the team record holder in every goalkeeping category. A 10- time All-Star selection, he was instrumental in helping the Wave win three league titles (1998, 2000, and 2001) in five league championship series appearances. He was named the league's Most Valuable Player on two occasions (1995-96, and 1997-98) and was also honored as the NPSL / MISL Goalkeeper of the Year nine times, including the last eight (Trades, continued from page 19) 1996 and was named CISL Rookie of the Year. Last sea- son he led the Sockers in every scoring category and was named MISL Offensive Player of the Month in November and MISL Offensive Player of the Week (October 20). In addition to his time in the MISL, the 5- 6, 155-pound forward also played in the A-League for the San Diego Flash (1998-2000) and with the El Paso Patriots (2001). He also played with the Harrisburg Heat (NPSL) during the 1997-98 season, the Detroit Safari (Nusinov, continued from page 20) involved, we will stay on the sidelines. As the Official Rules of Indoor Soccer only provide for the single-point system, how- ever, we certainly appreciate the fact that the rules of all the levels of indoor play are finally aligned." What remains to be seen is the effect the change has on a league trying to re-establish itself after a downward spiral near- ly led to its demise three years ago. Will the change turn off a core of fans or will it bring back old fans? Former San Diego Sockers and Anaheim Splash employee Gareth Maden thinks the game has bigger problems than the long-talked-about scoring issue. "It seems that many people felt that the scoring system was going to be the savior or the death of the game," said Maden. "It is neither. Multi-point or single-point does not bring fans out in droves, nor does it keep them at home. The debate clouds the issue of the other, more pressing, problems facing the game." Bob Melton, Executive Director of DASA, "Tatu is not only a great soccer player, but also a great individual and community leader." On March 23, 2003, Tatu retired from playing 21 seasons of indoor soccer–18 seasons with the Sidekicks. Tatu is near the top of the career list in several cate- gories. He is second with 21 seasons played (Victor Nogueira (23), San Diego), seventh with 633 games played (Michael King (650), Milwaukee), sec- ond in goals with 857 (Hector Marinaro (1201), Cleveland), second in assists with 728 (Zoran Karic (824), Cleveland), second in points with 1585 (Marinaro, 1886), second in shots with seasons. Said Wave President/CEO Tim Krause "Victor has done such a great deal for the organization both on and off the field, and we're certainly going miss him. We know he and his family will do well in San Diego. This is also an oppor- tunity for our organization to acquire three all-star quality players to help us move forward for years to come." "Chile" Farias (CISL) in 1997 and with the Arizona Thunder (WISL) in 1999. Bowers came to Baltimore prior to the 2001-02 season after the Blast selected him in the 2001 MISL Dispersal Draft. He was named 2002 MISL Defender of the Year after his first season in Baltimore and was an integral part of the Blast's 2003 championship run. In two seasons in Baltimore, he compiled 318 points and leaves the Blast ranked 21st all-time in points and sixth all-time in blocks. Prior to joining the Blast, Bowers spent seven seasons with the Detroit Rockers of the NPSL and four years with the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer. Bowers said, "I had two great years in Baltimore that were highlighted by last year's championship. I want to thank everyone in the Blast organization and the fans for every- thing. Being born and raised on the West Coast, I knew eventually I would return to San Diego and the Blast accommodated my wishes." The Sidekicks Tolbert holds a more optimistic view, however. "A number of fans have renewed their season tickets since hearing the news," said Tolbert. "In Dallas, I believe it will boost ticket sales for walkup [soccer purists or not.] The single point scoring system is simple. It's what the rest of the U.S. and the world understands. I never received a complaint or question about the scoring system until we played under a multi point system." Sydney Nusinov is a regular correspondent for GOAL Indoor. GOAL Indoor • August/September 2003 • 21 4396 (Marinaro, 4869), tied for second in game-winning goals with 77 (Marinaro, 99; Steve Zungul, 77), and first with 113 power-play goals. He has been part of all four Sidekicks' championship teams, winning titles in 1987, 1993, 1998, and 2001. Tatu is a six-time MVP, 11-time scoring champi- on, 12-time all-star, and three-time championship series MVP. Tatu is the only person to earn Player of the Year and Coach of the Year awards in the same season accomplishing this great achievement in 1998. Tatu will return for the 2003-2004 season for his sixth year as Head Coach for the Sidekicks. Tatu Sean Bowers
