"These issues are intertwined: The objectification of people, and the objec- tification of the planet," said Michael Shank, media consultant for the con- ference. "Modern Slavery and Climate Change: the Commitment of the Cities" is part of a larger symposium sponsored by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences from July 21-22 titled "Prosperity, People and Planet: Achieving Sustain- able Development in Our Cities." The conference will draw leaders from sev- eral cities worldwide including from the United States. "I wrote a speech for you, but prepared speeches are boring," the pope said during his visit to South America. The idea of a liberated heart was central to his message. "We don't need young people who waste their lives," he said. "We need young people with hope! Because they know Jesus and they have a free heart." He contin- ued, "Liberty is a gift that God gives us, but we must know how to receive it. … Hunger, drug addiction, sadness: all of these things take our freedom from us." In an apostolic letter published June 29, the pope established a secretariat for com- munications to oversee o©ces involved in a variety of media. "The current communication con- text, characterized by the presence and the development of digital media, by the factors of convergence and interactivity, requires a rethinking of the information system of the Holy See and dedication to a reorganization which, recognizing the history of internal development of the asset of communications of the Apostolic See, must proceed decisively towards integration and a unified management," the pope said. The o©ces that will converge include the Pontifical Council for Social Com- munications, the Holy See Press O©ce, Vatican Internet Service, Vatican Radio, the Vatican Television Center (CTV), the L'Osservatore Romano, Vatican Typogra- phy, Photograph Service and the Vatican Publishing House (Libreria Editrice Vaticana). The pope also wrote that the new sec- retariat will maintain the Holy See's website—www.vatican.va—and the pope's Twitter account, @pontifex.
