Literary Life Charlotte Gordon at her Salem home During an evening lecture hosted by the Rockport Public Library, laughter ripples through the crowd in response to local author Charlotte Gordon's quick wit. Gordon has a way of quip- ping at surprising moments, despite her relatively serious subject matter— the sometimes tragic, often romantic, and always inspiring lives of 18th- century author Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter, Mary Shelley. Although she traveled far and wide to research her latest book, Ro- mantic Outlaws: The Extraordinary Lives of Mary Wollstonecraft and Her Daughter Mary Shelley, Gordon's North Shore roots are strong and far- reaching. After studying at both Har- vard and Boston University, Gordon moved to the North Shore in 1986, first settling in Rockport and then Ipswich before landing in Glouces- ter, where she remains today. Gor- don began teaching at the Waring School in Beverly while writing her two early books of poetry. "I always wanted to be a writer," she says, "but I thought that I would be a poet.
