The oldest continually operating boarding school in America, The Governor's Academy has turned out more than its share of notable politicians, athletes, scientists, and artists. And it's far from alone. But it's not just secondary schools that stand out. The Pike School has a prestigious pre-kindergarten through grade nine program that's also very culturally diverse, with 38 percent of its enrollment consisting of African-American, Asian-American, Latino/Hispanic, Middle Eastern and multi-racial students. And Waldorf School at Moraine Farm is located on nearly 200 acres of woodland, meadows, gardens, and farmland, allowing its students to learn about the world within nature itself. North Shore families have a lot of wonderful schools to choose from right here in Massachusetts, but there are also many private school options outside the region, too. "One of the exciting trends at Berwick Academy in the past eight years has been the increased amount of interest from northern Massachusetts," says Greg Schneider, head of school at Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine. "As one of the few pre-k through 12 day schools in the area, Berwick presents a unique sense of community and an extraordinary physical campus for learning." And in nearby New Hampshire, Hampstead Academy offers world language instruction in Mandarin, Latin, and Spanish, while Heronfield Academy boasts an award-winning music program featuring jazz, chamber, and more.
