EFORE COLONIAL PATRIOTS DUMPED TEA INTO THE BOSTON HARBOR, BEFORE THE SIGNING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, BEFORE THE UNITED STATES EVEN BECAME A NATION, The Governor's Academy was educating students on the Massachusetts North Shore. The oldest continually operating boarding school in America, The Governor's Academy has turned out more than its share of notable politicians, athletes, scientists, and artists. And it's far from alone. The North Shore and its surrounding communities are home to dozens of exciting, pioneering, and elite private schools that educate students in innovative ways and prepare them to be remarkable citizens and leaders. For instance, Alyssa Cuddy, a 2010 Central Catholic High School graduate, was just awarded a Fulbright U. S. Student Program scholarship to Thailand, where she will work as an English teacher. At Pingree School, not only were 100 percent of its seniors accepted to college, but the overall student body is incredibly well rounded too, with 89 percent of students participating in Pingree athletics and 82 percent participating in the arts. But it's not just secondary schools that stand out. The Pike School has a prestigious pre-kindergarten through grade nine program that's also very culturally diverse, with 38 percent of its enrollment consisting of African-American, Asian-American, Latino/Hispanic, Middle Eastern and multi-racial students. And Waldorf School at Moraine Farm is located on nearly 200 acres of woodland, meadows, gardens, and farmland, allowing its students to learn about the world within nature itself. North Shore families have a lot of wonderful schools to choose from right here in Massachusetts, but there are also many private school options outside the region, too. "One of the exciting trends at Berwick Academy in the past eight years has been the increased amount of interest from northern Massachusetts," says Greg Schneider, head of school at Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine. "As one of the few pre-k through 12 day schools in the area, Berwick presents a unique sense of community and an extraordinary physical campus for learning." And in nearby New Hampshire, Hampstead Academy offers world language instruction in Mandarin, Latin, and Spanish, while Heronfield Academy boasts an award-winning music program featuring jazz, chamber, and more. Whether parents are searching for renowned music and arts programs, compassionate and progressive special education, rigorous academics, schools based in religious traditions, or high-tech learning tools, they're sure to find the perfect school for their children without leaving home.
