O fficially SCORE International's Mexican Liaison for over 20 years, but to those who knew him and worked with him over the years, Oscar Ramos Jassen, was, well, just Oscar. He was willing to help in any and all situations that arise when you are part of a desert racing organization that produces events in both the United States and Mexico. As we know, long-time SCORE Mexican Liaison Oscar Ramos Jassen, 52, of Tijuana, Mexico, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 23 following the third day of his fourth round of chemo sessions. Ramos was originally diagnosed with esophageal cancer in late April with a large tumor in his stomach area. He had been receiving testing and treatment at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia in Mexico City prior to his death on Thursday late afternoon. On the tragic day, it was reported by his family that Ramos returned to the home where he was living in Mexico City between chemo sessions and he suffered a severe drop in blood pressure and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His memorial service was held the next evening in Mexico City, the city where he was born and raised. Oscar played a significant role in the development and maintenance of a racing organization that has become an international treasure. In today's world we often hear the words 'it's not my job', but you never heard those words uttered by our dear lost comrade in arms, Oscar Ramos J. A practicing attorney in the U.S. and Mexico until his passing, Oscar was introduced to SCORE and then-owner Sal Fish in late 1995 by Juan Tintos Funcke, a two-time Baja California Secretary of Tourism. Thus began the tenure of Oscar Ramos J. with SCORE and the SCORE World Desert Championship. While Oscar's helping hands were at their very best in his native Mexico and in particular in Baja California, his presence and influence assisted SCORE in the United States as well, not only for races, but also for the annual SCORE Awards Night and SCORE exhibits at a number of trade shows over the years.
