SCORE 101 Using Baja Tactics And Facing New Challenges Whether they are newcom- ers to SCORE racing or veterans from other classes, UTV racers have also realized that it takes more than a well-built vehicle to win in this competitive class. "Racing a UTV is like racing any other vehicle in SCORE," says Johnny Angal. "It's a challenge and everyone likes a challenge. To win the class in the 2014 SCORE Baja 1000, Angel utilized proven Baja racing techniques that were essential to them taking the checkered flag at the podium. "At the Baja 1000, I had three other guys racing with me, so we wouldn't get worn out. We added a larger fuel cell, stretched our pits out. Once we took the lead soon after getting out of town (starting line) we kept the lead pretty much for the whole race." Along with using proven Baja racing techniques, UTV racers also have to face the same chal- lenges that other classes have seen and overcome. Those with the drive and determination to win, will work through those challenges and come out on top. Racers like Marc Burnett demonstrate how important it is to face these new challenges, but also provides a great exam- ple of the determination to win with patience and planning. " The biggest challenge was going from our old car to a new car," says Burnett. "We are learning the mechanics of our new car. Once again we tried to modify a lot of things and we've paid a heavy price for it. I'm very, very hungry to win a race this year. You're definitely going to see me on the podium again. All my sponsors have been very supportive." What's Next For UTV Racers Despite the challenges of greater competition, the UTV boom still going strong.
