By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Township of Rideau Lakes staff and councillors got mixed messages at a meet- ing last Thursday evening about how far road renam- ing of duplicate B, O, and R roads should proceed. Duplicate road names exist for private lanes leading to properties on the Bass, Big Rideau, Bel- lamy, Lower Rideau and Otter Lakes. The roads were named pre-amalgamation by the townships of South Elms- ley and Bastard and South Burgess (B and SB). Con- cerns have been raised about emergency person- nel confusion of the dupli- cates as well as problems with household deliveries. "The problem doesn't have an easy fix. This problem has been around since 1998," said Devel- opment Services Manager Brittany Mulhern. This year council finally started to make a stab at understanding the scope of the problem with an ad hoc committee of South Elmsley and B and SB councillors, the mayor and development services staff. The committee's man- date was to review and recommend on the issue of duplicate private road names in the Township, specifically the R, O, and B roads. Amalgamation made it necessary to change some road names, including duplicate 'Town line' roads which were renamed. Other duplicate names have stayed includ- ing Water Street in New- boro and Portland and Sta- tion Road in Portland and in South Elmsley. Changing road names comes with a cost and an inconvenience for resi- dents who have to change their mailing addresses The successful bidder on the former Ducks Roadhouse property on Concession Street is Westport Village Pharma- cy owner Tracey Phillips. She hasn't made any plans about the property's future except that it will soon become a vacant lot. Phillips purchased the Village Pharmacy busi- ness in the spring of 2014, a move away from 12 years as a corporate exec- utive at Rexall and back into a community pharma- cy where she began her career. Last week she also purchased the pharmacy building. "One thing for sure is we are not moving the pharmacy. The pharmacy is ideally located," she said. Phillips entered Ducks Roadhouse for the first time last weekend after getting someone to drill out the lock. As could be expected she found noth- ing salvageable in or about the property. The former bar had served the public as a restaurant for decades. More recently it has been serving as a home for a number of critters after it was abandoned and was put up for sale for unpaid taxes. Phillips decided to make the numbered com- pany purchase public after noting there has been speculation and rumours in the community about the future of the site. "I was really looking toward the future. A cou- ple of times in my life, opportunities have come up and I haven't done any- thing. I really didn't expect to win, but I did, so that's a really great sur- prise," she said. "I think there are a number of really good things which could be done with it. I would like to hear suggestions on what they think could be done with that space," said Phillips who can be con- tacted by email at west- p o r t v i l l a g e p h a r m a c y @gmail.com. A group of unions from community hospitals in Eastern Ontario claim cuts are coming in 2016 that will reduce surgery con- siderably. Those cuts are just the beginning according to the Health Care Tomorrow project. "Consultations held across the catchment area of these hospitals earlier this year promoted the idea that smaller commu- nities should not expect a full range of hospital ser- vices. "The latest announce- ment suggests that the push to integrate these institutions and cut, con- solidate and privatize pro- grams and services will intensify and will do that without meaningful public consultation, " said Louis Rodrigues, First vice-pres- ident of the Ontario Coun- cil of Hospital Unions/CUPE. The group is a collabo- ration of Brockville Gen- eral Hospital, Hotel Dieu Hospital in Kingston, Lennox and Addington County General Hospital, Kingston General Hospi- tal, Perth Smiths Falls Dis- trict Hospital, Providence Care and Quinte Health Care. "The overarching framework for the Health Care Tomorrow project is sustainability. Our mem- bers, who work to serve the public in our region's hospitals, do not accept that the province of Ontario cannot sustain viable hospitals in com- munities like Trenton, Brockville, Perth/Smith's Falls or Picton," Rodrigues said in a press release. One of those consulta- tions was at North Crosby Community June 1 where over 60 people attended. Some of the feedback from the meetings involved how daunting the system is. "Many patients in our region say they struggle to Justin Martin President 613-530-0773 RR 2 Westport, ON K0G 1X0 jtmartin@kingston.net 4 Septic Systems 4 Excavating 4 Landscaping 4 Road Work 4 Rock Excavating 4 Trucking 4 Residential & Commercial Snow Plowing & Sanding 4 Damp Proofing LTD. 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 43 Bedford St., Westport 613-273-8848 soho@rideau.net Mirror The Review Thursday, August 20, 2015 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 123, No. 33 $1 incl. tax "In the depths of winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."
