NEXT ISSUE'S SUPER QUESTION
Who is your favorite golf author and why?
Dave Clark
King's Walk Golf Course
Grand Forks, N.D.
A. I would say the understanding of
soils, plant pathology and being able to
spend a lot of time at the golf course.
Jimmie Rodriguez
Towa Golf Club
Santa Fe, N.M.
A. Strong agronomy skills, people
skills and strong financial skills.
Anthony Williams
Stone Mountain Golf Club
Stone Mountain, Ga.
A. Agronomic skills—the
physical pieces that make
the golf course function.
The second skill set is
environomics, working your
environmental plan into your
financial plan. And you've
got to have public relations
skills. The day of great golf
course superintendents
working in the shadows has
gone by the wayside. A
superintendent has got to
incorporate public relations
into his daily activities.
Jason Manfull
Crow Valley Golf Club
Davenport, Iowa
A. You need to be passionate
about the business. If you
don't like what you are
doing, you shouldn't be
doing it. You also need to
have a good personality
and be charismatic. It's not
just turf and agronomics
anymore, but public relations.
Finally you need a sense
of humor. You would drive
yourself crazy without it.
Josh Irish
Springfield Golf Club
Springfield, S.D.
A. Time management. Organizational
skills and certainly the ability to be
flexible. Any good superintendent is
going to need the best of those qualities.
